In 1966, Pryor was a guest star on an episode of The Wild Wild West. The first five tracks on the 2005 compilation CD Evolution/Revolution: The Early Years (1966–1974), recorded in 19, capture Pryor in this period. His popularity led to success as a comic in Las Vegas. He began appearing regularly on television variety shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show, The Merv Griffin Show, and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Inspired by Bill Cosby, Pryor began as a middlebrow comic, with material less controversial than what was to come. The next night was the same, and the next, and I rocked him each time. I couldn't bear to watch him shiver, so I put my arms around him there in the dark and rocked him like a baby until he calmed down. He shook like he had malaria, he was so nervous. Simone recalls Pryor's bout of performance anxiety: On one of his first nights, he opened for singer and pianist Nina Simone at New York's Village Gate. In 1963, Pryor moved to New York City and began performing regularly in clubs alongside performers such as Bob Dylan and Woody Allen. Publicity photo of Pryor for one of his Mister Kelly's appearances, 1968–1969 Angered that a white soldier was overly amused at the racially charged scenes of Douglas Sirk's film Imitation of Life, Pryor and several other black soldiers beat and stabbed him, although not fatally. ![]() According to a 1999 profile about Pryor in The New Yorker, Pryor was incarcerated for an incident that occurred while he was stationed in West Germany. Army from 1958 to 1960, but spent virtually the entire stint in an army prison. While in Peoria, he became a Prince Hall Freemason at a local lodge. He was sexually abused at age seven, and expelled from school at the age of 14. Pryor was one of four children raised in his grandmother's brothel. After Gertrude abandoned him when he was 10, Pryor was raised primarily by Marie, a tall, violent woman who would beat him for any of his eccentricities. His father, LeRoy "Buck Carter" Pryor (June 7, 1915 – September 27, 1968), was a former boxer, hustler and pimp. He grew up in a brothel run by his grandmother, Marie Carter, where his alcoholic mother, Gertrude L. Pryor was born on December 1, 1940, in Peoria, Illinois. He collaborated on many projects with actor Gene Wilder, including the films Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), and Another You (1991). He also appeared in action films, like Superman III (1983). His occasional roles in dramas included Paul Schrader's Blue Collar (1978). As an actor, he starred mainly in comedies. If you want to build a log home properly, learn it from Roy.Ĭlassic timber frame construction and post-and-beam construction are hallmarks of early colonial buildings in North America. Roy points out how many early home builders in North America created log homes with very tight joints designed to keep out the wind and elements. In this long-awaited episode, Roy demonstrates early-colonial construction, dimensions logs and join corners – all skills you’ll need if you want to build a log home properly. Many woodworkers have thought about how to build a log cabin. Roy shows us how to create a woven white oak seat for his rocker, and guest Bryant Holsenbeck shows how to weave a traditional basket. We also have our own extra collections for things like "books currently being read", "unread science fiction", etc. So for example all of my wife’s books go into her own collections which never show up on my e-readers and if I also want to read the book it also goes into one of my my collections (which she does not see on her e-readers). The advantage of the Kindle e-reader software – at least that for the more modern devices – is that you can choose which collections are shown on a device. Whenever we get a book it goes into one – or often more – collections. I’m feeling a bit smug about your difficulties as I don’t really experience your problem because I’ve been using collections since February 2011. Not all of them are on our various devices though one of them does have nearly all of them. There are 2733 books and documents in my Kindle library, which I share with my wife (we started before Family Library was available) and used to share with my late mother in law (this ignores the 50+ dictionaries and user guides and the pre-orders, a couple of which will turn up in about 15 minutes time). So tell me, how many ebooks do you have in your Kindle account right now? (I really should have done this years ago.) This will make it easier to sort the ebooks by genre, topic, and whether I want to discard or keep them. I’m going to make another pass and delete more ebooks, and after that I’ll probably sort the ebooks into collections. ![]() I went from close to 10k ebooks to only 2,800 or so, and things are beginning to be a little less cluttered. Next, scroll down the list of books, and once you’ve found one you want to delete, click on the title of the book. I hav found that we were most comfortable with deleting the older books. What you will probably want to do next is sort the ebooks by purchase date, title, or author. It is 2019, but Amazon still continues to treat ebooks acquired elsewhere as second-class content (go figure). Joining the PointsĬhoose the “Canvas1” item in the project Navigator and access the Inspector Panel so you can change the “Super” value to “CuadraticCanvas”. In order for our GraphicsPath instance to be drawn in the graphical context (the “g” parameter), we need to use the DrawPath method passing along our “gp” object as argument. Gp.AddQuadraticCurveToPoint(Me.pc1x,Me.pc1y,g.Width,g.Height/2)Īs you can see, here is where we create our GraphicsPath instance (the “gp” variable) so we can use it to add the quadratic curve using as the control point the values of our “PC1X” and “PC1Y” properties. Now is time to add the Paint Event Handler to our class. Remember to add the “Invalidate” line of code to the “Set” method on this property too. Set the Locking properties in the Inspector Panel for the Sliders and the Canvas, as shown in the picture. Use the Inspector Panel on them to activate the “Allow Live Scrolling”, under the Behavior section. The user interface for our example app is quite simple, with a few controls in it: This is the final look of our example application: ![]() Let’s see how simply it is to apply these principles during the creation of a graphic making use of a Bézier curve, and the best part is that this example project lets us move that control point, so you can make a better idea about how it goes. This property is really useful to know if we are dealing with a rectangle shape in our GraphicsPath instance. This one allows us to know if the path is empty this is, it doesn’t contain any shape definition in it. Check this value in order to know the current coordinate, so you can make the proper decision about what to do next in your code. Thus, this one would act as the starting (or initial) point for the next method drawing in the path.Īs for the available properties, you can use these: The interesting thing in GraphicsPath is that every call to any of these methods have the starting coordinate the ending point of the previous shape in the path, while you can use the MoveToPoint method in order to, well, move the virtual “cursor” to any point of your election without painting anything in the process. ![]() The available methods in the class give you the ability to create any shape you need in an easier way when compared with the Object2D class (and other classes you may use in combination), from simple rectangles (including the “rounded” variation), to arcs, curves or quadratic curves (Bézier curves) where we model them through a control point. Simply put, you only need to join the points! In Xojo there is a new class, GraphicsPath, that you can use to create graphics as a mathematical description of shapes and lines ranging from simple lines to Bézier curves, arcs, rectangles, there are many advantages to using these! For example, as a class on its own, it doesn’t even needs a graphical context (Graphics) in order to describe the shapes you want to use, and the mathematical representation means more control and precision. ![]() ![]() It took us roughly 14 years before Kingdom Hearts fans got a proper numbered sequel to Kingdom Hearts 2. Let’s take a look at some practical examples of how to use sidechain compression in a mix. The compressor is triggered by the Kick’s level, but the compressor affects the Bass track. Wave RCompressor in Logic Pro X on a Bass track getting its sidechain input signal from the Kick track. Short release times (20ms to 75ms) are best for subtle ducking effects, while slower release times that are timed to the tempo of the track are best for obvious pumping effects (more on that later). In most cases, you’ll want to use a fast attack time (Tweak the attack and release times to taste, depending on the specific effect you want to achieve.Adjust the threshold and ratio controls so that the bass is compressed by the desired amount whenever the kick drum hits. Some DAWs automatically allow any audio track to be “picked up” by the compressor’s sidechain input.Depending on your DAW, you may need to create an aux send that routes the kick signal to the bass compressor’s sidechain. This signal will control when the compressor engages. Select the kick drum audio as the sidechain input.Insert a compressor onto the bass track (select a compressor with a sidechain or key input). In this example, we’ll sidechain the bass guitar compressor from the kick drum, but the same setup can be used for any tracks: Here’s how to set up sidechain compression. A sidechain is often referred to as a key. The kick drum signal is sent (bussed) to the sidechain input of the bass compressor where the sidechain (“brain”) of the compressor analyzes the kick signal and tells the compressor to turn the bass down when the kick drum plays. Here we see a bass track routed through a compressor. ![]() The kick drum signal will trigger the compressor on the bass track so the bass dips in level each time the kick hits. In this case, we may want the bass sound to dip in level each time the kick plays so that we hear the attack of the kick clearly. ![]() For instance, two or more instruments often compete for attention in the same frequency range, like a kick drum and sub-bass. The concept of sidechaining can seem complicated at first, but once you master it, sidechain compression will help you achieve better separation and clarity in your mixes. Unlike traditional compression, which applies gain reduction based on the level of the signal you’re compressing, sidechain compression allows you to trigger gain reduction based on the level of a different source. Sidechain compression is a mixing technique that allows a compressor on one track to be controlled by another source in the mix. In this blog, you’ll learn how to set up sidechain compression on any track or bus, and I’ll share some of my favorite tips to help you dial in punchy, detailed, modern mixes. ![]() As track counts continue to grow and mixes become more complex, producers are looking for ways to carve out space and enhance the impact of each track. Sidechain compression has been around for decades, but it’s become an increasingly popular technique in the last few years. ![]() |
